How To Build a Good Rapport With Teachers

Letters of recommendation from teachers are a key component of college applications. Colleges recognize that your teachers spend significant time with you and trust them to provide a candid picture of who you are as a student and as a person.

Here are some tips to help you develop positive relationships with and leave lasting impression on your teachers that will help you get glowing letters of recommendation!

  • Participate in Class:Teachers are more likely to engage with students who engage with them. To build a relationship with a teacher, try to actively participate in their class. Whether it is a classroom discussion or you need clarification on a concept, don’t hesitate to participate!
  • Be Respectful:Arrive for your class on time, greet your teacher as you enter, treat your peers respectfully, avoid talking when the class is on, be alert and engaged during class and maintain a positive attitude!
  • Demonstrate Initiative:Remember to come to class prepared, with all required assignments complete. Commit to doing extra reading and share this information in class; teachers appreciate students who offer fresh perspectives, raise the level of learning for their peers, and want to help others succeed.
  • Be Open about You Plans & Goals:Set up meetings with your teachers to inform them about what you are doing both in & out of school. Sharing your academic, professional, or personal goals with your teachers will make them invested in your academic & professional success. Understanding your plans will also allow them to share their expertise with you.
  • Connect with Them Outside the Classroom:Approach your teachers after class during office hours. Use this time to get extra help, ask questions, inquire about extracurricular activities or research related to the subject, or talk about your progress in class. This can be a great opportunity for both of you to know the other better.
